No room at the Inn!

Come on local churches...... This is appalling! Churches open your doors! The Lord tells us too! Did you all enjoy singing I surrender all as they were freezing outside your doors? That is not worship! Opening your doors and smashing your golden calf is what the Lord is wanting as worship.

SR seeks more beds for homeless

Council to vote on expanding shelters when rain, freezing temperatures expected

When Sutter Medical Center officials called Nick Baker to ask if he had a bed for a homeless man they had treated for frostbite on both his feet, Baker was forced to say "no."

> OAS_AD('Middle'); Santa Rosa's two city-financed homeless shelters - an 80-bed facility off Finley Avenue and a 40-bed shelter off Brookwood Avenue - were at capacity.

The call to Baker, who oversees the Homeless Services Center in downtown Santa Rosa, came near the beginning of a 10-day string of freezing to subfreezing temperatures that ended last week.

The increased demand for beds brought by the extended chill is likely to accelerate efforts to temporarily expand Santa Rosa's two shelters, and possibly Sonoma County's as well, when freezing and torrential rains are forecast.

The City Council on Dec. 19 is scheduled to consider changes that would allow a 15 percent increase in the number of beds allowed at the city shelters, a total of 18 extra beds, based on anticipated adverse weather conditions.

"I know it will be controversial, but it really is a life-and-death situation out there," Baker said.

A meeting for neighbors to discuss the proposed changes will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Conference Room 1 of the City Hall Annex at 90 Santa Rosa Ave.

Bill Fraser, whose Finley Avenue home sits just across the street from the southwest area shelter that opened last year, said, "I had been worried the place could become a magnet to those who have not cleaned up their act, but that has not developed."

While Fraser is concerned about the extra dozen or so beds that could be added on cold nights, he said, "I don't have a problem with it as long as the operators can manage their clients."

"Sleeping under a bridge is not a good thing," Fraser said.

Baker said since January 2005 at least 14 homeless people have been treated for hypothermia at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Others have received treatment at other area hospitals, he said.

He said the problem really hit home last week when, as temperatures dipped to 29 degrees, he got a call from Sutter asking if he had room at the Homeless Service Center's five-bed respite facility.

The facility acts as a transition for ailing homeless who are released from hospitals after initial treatment.

"They said they had a man with frostbite on both his feet, and they wanted to see if we had room for him. We didn't," Baker said.

The county also funds a 30-bed shelter near the Sonoma County Jail. Baker oversees the center and all three homeless shelters on behalf of Catholic Charities, which has contracts to run the city and county shelters.

Mayor Jane Bender said she supports the temporary expansion proposal.

"Can you imagine turning people away when it's 32 degrees out?" she said.

Bender said the need to protect the homeless from the cold and torrential rains will be balanced with the promises the city made to the neighborhoods in which the two shelters are located, promises to stick by a limited number of beds.

Bender and Baker said the expansion, if approved by the council, would be on a day-to-day basis only.

City program specialist Megan Basinger said the policy being proposed would empower City Manager Jeff Kolin, based on weather forecasts, to approve the use of the extra beds on nights when temperatures are expected to hit 32 degrees or when a storm is expected to cause flooding problems.

The policy would be in effect from October to April.

Baker said those allowed to fill the extra beds would be pre-screened each day to ensure no one with a problematic history is allowed in.

"This is strictly for emergency situations," he said.

Baker is hoping the county adopts a similar policy, a move Bender hopes local religious organizations embrace.

"I would like to see some of the faith-based groups open up their churches on these cold nights as well," she said.

IN THE COMING YEARS THE PROBLEM OF HOMELESSNESS WILL GO AWAY. YOU SEE POEOPLE WILL AFFORD THESE HALF_MIllION DOLLAR HOMES. that is the prevailing view of most people in this country. Wait till the problem gets bigger---then deal with it?!!

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 07:32P

put these people up somewhere, 32 degrees

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 06:05P

They should only be for legal US citizens.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 06:02P

SOLUTION: the beds should be prioritized just as everything else is in this world. frostbite victim takes priority over a healthy guy. SIMPLE. DO YOUR JOB, CITY COUNCIL. PRIORITIZE.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 03:27P

That this situation would arrive was obvious. May be right thing to do, but original portrayals and assurances when SR Eastsiders planted the shelter on exisitng SW residents/neighborhood were less than genuine.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 03:11P

Yeah, I really would like to see these "churches" open up their doors. Right. . . they don't have any money. . .

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 02:43P

07:36A That's just flip. People can care and help without turning one's own house into an ad hoc shelter. What would people REALLY think about a mayor living with drug-addicted homeless in her house? Her rivals would spin it in the worst possible way

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 02:23P

one thing not mentioned is the fact that the homeless dont get to use the beds but at 10pm til 5am, why cant they keep the beds opened longer when its so cold, have pity people, what would Jesus do?

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 01:58P

"Baby, it's cold outside."

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 01:53P

Yeah, right, always "willing to help" by donating a coat or a bag of food or a blanket, but get real, what you libs really expect is the government to set up another community based org. that you can get involved in.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 01:52P

1:29 - GOT AN EXTRA BED IN YOUR HOME?

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 01:50P

Hey, I'm freezing INSIDE my house. I can't afford to keep the furnace running 24/7. I have to chose between food and PG&E. I can see my breath when I walk down the hallway. Have mittens on, a knit cap on and a coat over my clothes.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 01:43P

Aren't they using the Armory as a shelter anymore, or is it because of the war in Iraq and deployment of the Guard that the armory can't be used to house the city's bums and homeless-by-choice?

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 01:41P

At whose expense was this man treated for frostbite on his feet at Sutter Hospital?

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 01:40P

What's the deal? Is it getting too crowded under those bridges?

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 01:29P

How can we help!!! What do we need to do!!! who do we call!!! how do we get involved? I'm willing to help.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 12:27P

11:21am.....drugs and alcohol are not the only reasons for people to find themselves homeless..........

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 11:33A

Why are there so many homeless people in the US? Isnt this supposed to be the richest and greatest country in the world? Disgusting!!!

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 11:32A

KUDOS to the REDWOOD GOSPEL MISSION !!! Even though they were not mentioned, they provide multi-faceted homeless services. They saved my life !!!!

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 11:21A

The homeless must take responsibility for their own condition. Charity and assistance are fine but the recipients must take steps to rid their lives of drugs and alcohol which are the problem in the vast majority of cases.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 11:09A

The Churches don't want to deal with all of the associated problems and expense.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 11:00A

I really only feel sorry for the kids that might be involved in this issue. They don't really have a choice and that is truly sad.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 10:57A

How bout the Los Robles Lodge. Lots of beds there that are not being used.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 10:29A

One way bus ticket to anywhere but here sounds just fine. No mo beds. Just move along, now we have too many problems with gangs, drugs and car wrecks.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 10:00A

How many of these homeless are drug addicts? They should be put in a program. I know someone who was homeless for 2 years because of drugs. I wouldn't wish being out in that cold on anyone.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 09:35A

get a job like the rest of us.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 09:30A

Shelter is basic human right. Since squatting is illeagal, another option must be presented. With the middle class shrinking, this is a good time to start paying attention to this problem before it gets bigger.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 08:56A

Baker, three cheers for you!!You can say this again, Christians show your fruit. Open those doors.Churches should rise to the need. Also open more mental facilities.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 08:11A

Somebody come get the four guys staying around the Mission Blvd bridge near Montgomery Drive.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 07:36A

Mayor Jane Bender cares about the homeless. How many are staying at her house? Because she cares, taxpayers pay. If you build more shelters, more will come. This isn't San Francisco. Yet.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 07:31A

Homelessness used to be a crime. It was called vagrancy.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 07:12A

Santa Rosa should do what San Francisco did: offer a one way bus ticket to anywhere in the US for those who want it, to get a fresh start with family or friends. Very successful program.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 06:59A

Being homeless is not a crime so not all homeless are criminals.

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 06:48A

Where are these homeless coming from? Are other cities dumping them off in Sonoma rather than haul them in for petty crimes?

Monday, Dec 11, 2006 06:39A

I'm glad to see the problems that WAAG insisted would follow at Sam Jones Hall have not developed. WAAG should be ashamed of how they fought against the shelter.
